tracie potts begins our live coverage this morning from denver and how it's being received there. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. well, mitt romney came here under pressure to perform against what even some republicans say is one of the most skilled debaters in modern politics. the debate was to make differences clear on lowering the debt. >> you said you'd cut the deficit in four. it's four years later, we still have trillion dollar bef sits. >> the way we do it is $2.50 for every cut, we ask for $1 of additional revenue paid for, as i indicated earlier, by asking those of us who have done very well in this country to contribute a little bit more to reduce the deficit. >> reporter: the president insisted romney would spend $5 trillion on tax breaks favoring the wealthy. >> math, common sense and our history shows us that's not a recipe for job growth. >> everything he just said about my tax plan is inaccurate. >> reporter: they clashed on wall street, whether banks

5:04 am
he did understand the problems that we're facing. >> and now we are, what, 12 days away until the next debate. professor, what do the two candidates need to do between now and that next date on the 16th? >> well, i think obama needs to become a little bit more assertive, a little bit more aggressive. as the front runner, i believe he felt like he could just sort of coast a little bit and as the front runner not make any mistakes and perhaps maybe romney would make some mistakes. i think romney needs to be more specific about his plan if he wants to move forward. he needs to give those details that obama was hammering him on. >> it will be interesting to see how that next one pans on. the next one is a town hall with a list of people versus a single moderator asking the questions. we want to know right now with a set-up like that, who do you think will come out on top? >> i think obama will be much better prepared an his general demeanor typically plays well for a town hall meeting. if he can eliminate the pauses and come out with a little more energy, i think he'll probably
5:05 am
do pretty well at a town hall format. >> so specifically what does each candidate need to do to sway voters in that next debate? >> i think both of them really need to speak to the concerns of the voters. they need to appear concerned about the state of the country. i think obama needs to do a better job of promoting the things and benefits of his presidency and talk a little bit about what he's done to help the american people. romney needs to keep doing what he's doing and be adwrggressived assertive and offer some details of his plan. >> the consensus definitely that round one goes to mitt romney. we'll see how obama steps up in round two. jim, thank you very much for getting up early with us and joining us today. >> thank you. >> nbcbayarea.com will have your complete coverage of last night's debate in denver. check that out and read the entire transcript of the 90-minute exchange and also see video highlights from both president obama and mitt romney. be sure to let us know what you
